Frequently Asked Questions
What is the EVcourse: EV Charging Help app?
It's an app that helps you fix common public charging problems. When you're stuck at a charger that won't start, has payment issues, or shows error codes, the app walks you through things to try.
It works offline, so you can use it even without cell service at the charging station.
Is the app free?
Yes, the app is free to download. We want to help EV drivers get back on the road without charging for the privilege.
Does the app work offline?
Yes! All troubleshooting content is stored locally on your device. This is important because many charging stations are in areas with poor cell reception.
Why won't my charger start?
Common reasons include:
- The charge port isn't unlocked on your car
- The charger needs you to authorize payment first
- The cable isn't fully seated in the port
- The charger itself has a fault
The app helps you check each of these systematically.
What should I do if my payment is declined?
First, check that your payment method is valid in the charging network's app. Some networks require pre-authorization.
Try a different payment method if available. Some chargers accept contactless cards directly if the app isn't working.
The charging cable is stuck. What do I do?
Don't pull hard. First, make sure charging has actually stopped (check both the charger and your car's display).
Try unlocking from inside your car. Most EVs have a manual cable release in the trunk or frunk.
The app has specific instructions for different car models.
Why is my car charging slowly?
Several factors affect charging speed:
- The charger's maximum power output
- Your car's maximum acceptance rate
- Battery temperature (cold batteries charge slower)
- Current state of charge (charging slows above 80%)
If the charger shows much lower power than expected, there may be a fault with that specific charger.
How do I know if the charger is broken or if it's my car?
Try a different charger at the same station if available. If multiple chargers fail, the issue is likely your car. If one charger fails but another works, report the broken one.
The app helps you work through this decision systematically.
What charging networks does the app cover?
The troubleshooting tips are general and work with most charging networks. Specific steps may vary, but the core troubleshooting process is similar across ChargePoint, Electrify America, EVgo, Tesla Superchargers, and other networks.
Does cold weather affect charging?
Yes. Cold batteries charge slower and may limit power acceptance. Some EVs precondition the battery when navigating to a charger.
In very cold weather (-10°C or below), expect longer charging times and consider preconditioning if your car supports it.
Should I charge to 100%?
For daily driving, charging to 80% is better for battery longevity. Charge to 100% only when you need the extra range for a trip.
Most EVs let you set a charge limit in the car's settings.
